11th June 2015

African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Dr. Donald Kaberuka paid a surprise visit to the MINDS West Africa Civic Education participants on the 11th of June 2015. Kaberuka, who also serves on the MINDS Advisory Board, shared his thoughts on the mindset African Youth have to adopt on the developing Continent. Quoting former US President John F. Kennedy, Kaberuka advised the participants, “Ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country.”

The MINDS West Africa Civic Education Workshop in Elections and Governance was a two-day workshop held on the 11th and 12th of June 2015 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. The Civic Education workshops falls part of one of two events hosted by MINDS under the Youth Programme. The programme addresses the challenges and opportunities that the youth of Africa need to acknowledge when it comes to governance affairs in Africa.

The workshop was attended by over 20 English and French-speaking participants from mainly West African countries. The first day’s agenda included topics such as types and indicators of democracy, the electoral cycle as well as an introduction to the African Charter. Day two’s topics addressed issues surrounding stakeholder engagement, effective communication and designing a communication strategy.

One of the objectives of the Civic Education workshop is to facilitate open learning and training on African elections and governance, enabling youth to ‘create authentic African solutions’ through peaceful civic participation in the electoral process.
